Mahan on Naval Warfare (Dover Maritime)

ePub Mahan on Naval Warfare (Dover Maritime) by Alfred Thayer Mahan in History

Description

A sermon preached by Jonathan Edwards to his Enfield; Connecticut; congregation in July 1741; "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" is particularly noted for its vivid descriptions of the torments of Hell and mankind's natural depravity. At the same time; it was also an appeal to man's need for salvation and a reminder of the agonies that awaited the unreformed. Coming during the height of the Great Awakening — a period of religious fervor in the first half of the eighteenth century — the homily was at once regarded by many as the greatest ever given on American soil and vehemently attacked by others as puritanical "fire and brimstone." One thing seems certain: it made a lasting impact on American Christianity.Accompanying this landmark document are sermons by nine other influential Puritans of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries; among them Thomas Shepard's "The Parable of the Ten Virgins;" Cotton Mather's "An Hortatory and Necessary Address;" John Cotton's "The Way of Life;" as well as sermons by John Winthrop; Increase Mather; Jonathan Mayhew; Thomas Hooker; Peter Bulkeley; and Samuel Willard.Enlightening and thought-provoking; the volume will serve as primary source material in many American history and literature courses.

Review
5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Companion or replacement volume?By Bookworm64Enjoyed this volume of excerpts and essays quite a bit more than I expected. Mahan has a way with words that still reads well today; and in the era of supercarriers; submarines; and huge cargo ships; even more relevant to global power. Don't be fooled by the coal-burning ships on the cover; the strategies and theories he writes about apply to all eras of naval warfare. The only downside to this volume is that a decent chunk is taken from his better known "Influence of Sea Power Upon History". If you have that; though; don't regret getting this one as well; as it covers much more.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. 1660-1805" is better as a newbie read but came way later for ...By NewlpostRead as companion to "The influence of sea power upon history; 1660-1805 ". See that review. This is essentially a dissertation that was presented to an expert military naval audience. The illustrated "The influence of sea power upon history; 1660-1805" is better as a newbie read but came way later for a less expert audience. This is the historical piece that led to a whole new way of thinking about what sea power actually is and does.... and can't do.Doesn't matter what YOU believe. What matters is what the people in charge of everything everywhere thought. Even allowing for massive technology shifts; they still pretty much follow this logic.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Mahan is great reading. Mahan's theories are a must read for anyone desiring to understand modern naval strategy.
