Maine: The Pine Tree State from Prehistory to the Present

DOC Maine: The Pine Tree State from Prehistory to the Present by Richard W. Judd in History

Description

In the summer of 1974 Byron Dix discovered in Vermont the first of many areas in New England believed to be ancient Native American ritual sites. Dix and coauthor James Mavor tell the fascinating story of the discovery and exploration of these many stone structures and standing stones; whose placement in the surrounding landscape suggests that they played an important role in celestial observation and shamanic ritual.

A robust history...By HMS Warspite"Maine: The Pine Tree State from Prehistory to the Present" is a scholarly compilation by the University of Maine; undertaken to provide what was in 1995 a modern history of the state. It is the product of many authors; some of who collaborated on specific chapters; and all of whom followed their particular academic specialty. The result is a generally very interesting portrait of Maine; from the arrival of the Paleo-Indians following the last Ice Age; up through the early 1990's. The colonial chapters and the first hundred years of statehood are covered in good detail by some fairly readable narratives. There is much here of interest: Maine's participation in the Revolutionary War; War of 1812; and the Civil War; the cycles of its boom-and-bust resource-based economy; and its slow slide out of the mainstream of the country in the 20th Century. As the later chapters close on the present; they admittedly lose the advantage of historical perspective and are frankly not much better than stale news stories. Overall; however; this is a decent read. The 600 pages of text are supplemented by some nice maps but unfortunately few illustrations or photographs. Cautiously recommended to the reader with the time to invest in the topic and the book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Densely written book. Fits in well with the course ...By HollyDensely written book. Fits in well with the course content; and my personal Maine book collection. The primitive history is slim but hey once you get to the 1600's the infinite internal and external histories are deep. Chapters are written by different authors; and they sometime have a an overlapping continuity which helps to get the big picture that is Maine history.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Maine" The Pine Tre State fro Prehistory to the PresentBy Gale LimanskyThis book arrived in good condition and in a very timely manner. It is exactly what I was looking for as a gift for a friend who has just purchased property and relocated to Maine. This will give her a lot of background on the area so that she can familiarize herself with the history; customs and food of this new area in which she has had no previous experience.
