I read it for a class in college and I kept it; it was so well-written; argued; and researched. A must-read for anyone interested in Virginia history and race relations. Wish the author would release a 2nd edition with an intro connecting the Black Lives Matter Movement today and his research into post WWII Jim Crow politics in the Commonwealth.6 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Southern baby boomers will especially appreciate the best explanation I've read of why things are the way they are in the South today. Smith makes history an enjoyable read.
