Cadmus Marcellus Wilcox started off his military career as a promising young West Point cadet and proved himself in battle with service as an officer in the Mexican War. But when the South seceded in 1861; Wilcox; along with 305 other West Point graduates; sided with the Confederacy. Aside from the historical perspective his life provides; a closer analysis reveals Wilcox as a man whose life; like those of many of his colleagues; was forever altered by the Civil War. Author Gerard Patterson brings his little-known subject to life in this fascinating biography.

Well researched and written history of a deserving subjectBy Don Erickson; USCTE (pderickson@compuserve.com)Easily the most important book on the Topographical Engineers since those by Goetzmann; Ryan; and Traas. Where these earlier books explained the role of the Topographical Engineers in western exploration and the Mexican War and the administrative history of the Corps; McElfresh has taken on the Civil War period of this illustrious group. The result is more than worth the money.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Best Civil War book about Topographical EngineersBy john d simpsonMr. McElfresh did a great job providing so much detail regarding information about topographical engineers; their tools of the trade; their tactics; methods; etc. This book was exactly what I was looking for. Great Maps of the Civil War by William H Miller; with 32 removable maps is a great book as well. I highly recommend both. Maps and Mapmakers is the best war map book I've ever read. Mr. McElfresh also has an hour plus long video on YouTube from when this book was released in 1999. I recommend watching that as well.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great book for some background of the Civil WarBy Coffee and TeaThis book is a great addition to my library; and also provides some deeper background of some of the men who are only talked about casually in many of the books relating to the Civil War. Mapmakers were a very important part of the Civil War; and in fact for any war. I am enjoying this book for the background it provides me with to gain a better appreciation for those who fought during this time on both sides.
