A “witty; lively and wholly fascinating†(The New York Times) portrait of an iconic Southern hero With lively storytelling and full-hearted Southern directness; Roy Blount; Jr.; presents a unique portrait of Robert E. Lee. Fascinated by the qualities that made Lee such a charismatic; though reluctant; leader; Blount vividly conveys Lee’s audacity and uncanny successes in battle; as well as his humility; his quirky sense of humor; and the sorrowful sense of responsibility he felt for his outnumbered; half-starved army. The first concise biography of this American legend; Robert E. Lee will appeal to history and military buffs; students of Southern culture; and every reader curious about the makeup of a man who has become an American icon.

More than an emotional opinion; this book has the research and context to back it up.I felt like I finally understood who she was; and got to know the woman we; unfortunately; only see depicted as a white-haired grandma.Martha was fun and sexy and devoted. Its too bad all the hype surrounds the likes of Marie Antionette; a selfish teenager. When a woman like Martha Washington runs circles around her. They need to make this book into a movie and let the Nation know the woman who stood next to a man like George Washington; as his partner and confidant.I highly recommend to any Patriot.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Loved it! Research much have been tedious to pull this much history together to form an educated biography!By JacobI loved this book! I took my time reading it so that everything could soak in; but I finally finished it now.The author did such thorough research and it really helped me to get to know Martha Washington as a person rather than just a cold; distant portrait as a side note to George Washington. It seems that they were greatly in love and it's very comforting to know how much he adored and respected Martha. It's empowering to realize that she was a strong independent woman who chose to marry George and comforted and accompanied him in the birth of our nature. She was vital to our history in so many ways that I wasn't aware of! So glad I decided to read this! I'm beginning a personal "First Ladies Challenge" where I want to learn more about US history and to see it from their eyes. This was the first book on my list and I am intrigued and encouraged to keep going. Next I'll be reading all about Abigail Adams.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful.
