Meditations on Vatican Art

PDF Meditations on Vatican Art by Mark Haydu LC STL in History

Description

One of the oldest monotheistic religions known to humankind; Judaism has withstood the tests of time. So what exactly are the tenets of this ancient faith that have been passed down over the millennia; and how do they apply to our lives in the 21st century? The Basic Beliefs of Judaism gives an updated overview of the belief system on which the Jewish faith is based. Epstein takes a contemporary point of view; looking at how the basic beliefs of Judaism fit into the lives of modern Jews. He does this with an eye toward helping the reader form his/her own understanding of Judaism. The book touches upon beliefs relating to creation; God; and the cosmos; as well as beliefs relating to day-to-day issues of family relations; social interactions; and ethics. Epstein draws from the Torah; the Talmud; Jewish folklore; and Jewish history to give the reader an understanding of how these beliefs were formed and have continued to evolve.

I was attracted by the classical art and the Jesuit spirituality. It seemed perfect for a priest who appreciates classical religious art and is an amazing spiritual leader. Most recently I purchased it for our convent. It's too good to pass up. With a Jesuit Pope in the Vatican; it seems right to experience the spirituality that formed the new Vicar of Christ. It's the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola and the best of religious art rolled into one presentation.6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Great visual tool for devotion and meditationBy Chris from OhioThis was a terrific book. It is a large coffee-table sized book with all color pictures and detailed meditations that follow the format of the Ignatius Spiritual Exercises. Note that the book is not attempting to catalog all Vatican art (there are hundreds of thousands of pieces). Instead; the author is choosing specific pieces of sacred art that follow a theme of events of salvation history and the beauty (and/or glory) of these events for followers of the faith. This would be a great gift for any Christian and especially Catholic Christian who wants to meditate on the sweep of salvation history that culminates in the Resurrection; and the Hope (and; yes; the responsibilities) that this event signals.Highly recommended.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An Ignatius retreatBy Holly SThis book has wonderful pictures and meditations that offer insight well beyond what the average viewer of this art would see and comprehend. Together these meditations add up to an Ignatius retreat that I have found to be quite inspiring and uplifting. For those of you less interested in the retreat aspect; the meditations provide a lot of insight into the art and what the artist was conveying. I bought a second copy to circulate to some friends. For a book with beautiful color photos of the art; it was surprising inexpensive. Can't recommend it highly enough. It was well packed; shipped in a timely manner; and appropriately described.
