Melungeons: The Last Lost Tribe in America

ePub Melungeons: The Last Lost Tribe in America by Elizabeth Hirschman in History

Description

In Glorying in Tribulation; Stetson presents a new dimension of Sojourner Truth's character. Much of the information regarding this oft-quoted African American woman is either the stuff of legend or is in dispute. This important new biography takes both legend and fact and sets them into a larger historical context. The authors utilize archival sources; and other forms of direct and indirect evidence to create a better understanding of Truth. We see her victories as well as her defeats--we see her as a real person. Truth comes alive in the pages of this book through her poignant; prophetic words and we realize that what she spoke of in the nineteenth century is just as relevant to us today. Glorying in Tribulation offers students; scholars; and teachers of American history and culture studies a comprehensive look and a new perspective on Truth's contribution to American history. It is a long-overdue; exciting interpretation of the meaning of Sojourner Truth's life.

I also enjoy the fact that so many family names are providedBy StephenHI have been studying Melungeons in Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina for about three years. I found some very interesting ideas in this book. I also enjoy the fact that so many family names are provided. I personally believe that "admixture" has a lot to do with the origin of the people of the Great Smoky Mountain area. If you are from this area; this is a must read book. However; I do not believe they are a "Lost Tribe" as indicated by the title. These are simple country people who have been in those mountains for a very long time that represent complex haplogroups.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. MelungeonsBy AldenaI find it a good resesarch tool. I find it an extention of historical facts to 'The Melungeons' by N.Brent Kennedy which has more 'facts' to the families that I am following. The Melungeons has always been a fringe misunterstood people for centuries.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
