Good Minimanual for techniques and attitudes of the urban guerrillaBy gt surberReview – Minimanual of the Urban Guerrilla Carlos Marighella“Minimanual of the Urban Guerrilla" is a 40 page pamphlet for the urban guerrilla; as opposed to bandits; outlaws; and right wing counterrevolutionaries. It was written in 1969 by a Brazilian for use by antigovernment; antipolice; anti United States and anti capitalists fighters.Carlos Marighella was a real figure who was deeply involved in the guerrilla work in Brazil through the late 1950's and through 1960's. He was several times over captured; imprisoned; tortured and then finally "eliminated" in 1969 by the Brazilian police. The book reads fairly well but occasionally the translator slips up on English idiom. Essentially this is an outline for training urban guerrillas; suitable for stimulating discussion. At first I thought this was a plant by the establishment. But I checked and it is not. This is not quite on par with Che Querva's “Guerrilla Warfare†or Mao Zidong's “The Red Book of Guerrilla Warfare†both more famous works on guerrilla fighting. Che focuses more on the rural freedom fighter. Mao is more generalist in approach. Nor is it as in depth as General David Petraeus's “US Army/ Marine Counterinsurgency Field Manual.†But as a stimulus to more in depth discussion; for training recruits; this is excellent. This book has also been popular with various other guerrilla; antiestablishment groups around the world. For those interested in the methods of the guerrilla; this is an excellent part of the history. The book does not go into philosophy or history of the movements. But the Minimanual is excellent for techniques and attitudes of the urban guerrilla.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Worth reading; particularly with prior reading of "On Guerilla Warfare" and foco theory (not making any judgements about whether or not foco is applicable in every context; I don't happen to think it is; just like I don't think protracted people's war is applicable in every context; but in my opinion they make reading this text more contextualised and more relevant to figuring out what we DO need to do).0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
