"Jacoby accomplishes her task with clarity; thoroughness; and an engaging passion." -Los Angeles Times Book Review At a time when the separation of church and state is under attack as never before; Freethinkers offers a powerful defense of the secularist heritage that gave Americans the first government in the world founded not on the authority of religion but on the bedrock of human reason. In impassioned; elegant prose; celebrated author Susan Jacoby traces more than two hundred years of secularist activism; beginning with the fierce debate over the omission of God from the Constitution. Moving from nineteenth-century abolitionism and suffragism through the twentieth century's civil liberties; civil rights; and feminist movements; Freethinkers illuminates the neglected achievements of secularists who; allied with tolerant believers; have led the battle for reform in the past and today.Rich with such iconic figures as Thomas Jefferson; Abraham Lincoln; Thomas Paine; and the once-famous Robert Green Ingersoll; Freethinkers restores to history the passionate humanists who struggled against those who would undermine the combination of secular government and religious liberty that is the glory of the American system.

Definitely designed for the fighting man today who is laden with body armor. Really; for all you vets who served in Iraq and Afghanistan who carried the standard combat load; "Didn't you feel tired just from basic movements?" I know wearing all that kit doesn't make you as supple or flexible as our man-dressing wearing adversaries. The Modern Hand to Hand Combat book addresses the issue; looking back at the ancient Samurai warrior who was just as encumbered as the modern Infantry fighting man and fought the hard fights against their foes and still came on top.A pretty good read; and the author has an extensive knowledge of various martial arts; but don't take his word for it. Read the material and take it with a grain of salt. In the end you; the reader decide what you want to believe.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Insightful RealisticBy B. VisherA lot of guys buy these books hoping for the ultimate fighting style but such a style doesn't exist. It makes no sense for a fully armored fully armed soldier to engage the enemy employing Gracie Jujitsu. GJ was designed for in ring combat; I mention this mainly because the common criticism I see of Mr.Isler and other authors is that they don't emphasize enough empty hand scenarios; this is as real as it gets for combat. Gracie/ Brazilian jujitsu is a very specialized skill that is only useful in a ring environment; it has no value outside the ring; Mr. Isler has shown things from a soldiers perspective who is well armed enough to not have to employ excessive ground fighting trying to emulate their favorite UFC fighter in the middle of a WarZone; guns and knives are jujistu's Kryptonite it only makes sense that they would emphasize weaponry in warfare. There are too many delusional fools out there who are not qualified to critique this book. Hakim Isler is a warrior and a Man's Man and deserves respect for his contributions to the skill sets of our armed forces.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
