Each entry; written by a top scholar in the field; is meticulously documented and illustrated (as needed). The linguistics and scope of this volume really "make it" for the serious scholar; most modern neo-heathens might have a problem with the academic "dry" text. Me; I lap it up. Another point: this is a wide-ranging study; bringing in material from non-"Scandinavian" peoples (Balts; Slavs; Finns; Saami; and more) who certainly were in extensive cultural contact and exchange with the "settled men" (bomenn). Also interesting were the studies on ritual funerary drama; which if one looks at it; is actually still carried on today (Church services; graveside ceremonies; wakes). But the book isn't limited to funerary customs; we see information on the evil eye; the Finnish Tieta"ja" (sorry; can't do a omlyd with this program); gender and sexuality; and a lot more.1 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great ReferenceBy LynnThis book was quite helpful with the research that was needed in the sequel to Frey's Saga. I highly recommend it for history buffs.3 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Very GoodBy Josh SumnerThis book has a great collection of essays that uses many fields to more fully understand Pre-Christian religons in Scandinavian. Apart from the linguistics which I find very boring; it is pack full of information. Also intersting Neil Price offers a theory about drama usage in funerals during that time; which is compelling. I would recommend this book to anyone intrested in Pre-Christian Religion in Scandinavian or any fellow heathens.
