Mort Künstler's Civil War: The South

DOC Mort Künstler's Civil War: The South by Mort Künstler in History

Description

This is a dramatic true story of Antarctic tragedy and survival among the heroic group that was to lay supplies across the Great Ross Ice Shelf in preparation for the Endurance expedition. Launched by Shackleton (and led by Captain Aenaes Mackintosh); this courageous crew completed the longest sledge journey in polar history (199 days) and endured near-unimaginable deprivation. They accomplished most of their mission; laying the way for those who never came. All suffered; some died. Now Australian writer Lennard Bickel honors these forgotten heroes. Largely drawn from the author's interviews with surviving team member Dick Richards; this retelling underscores the capacity of ordinary men for endurance and noble action.

Small but beautifully illustrated; with much detailBy LornwalA small but beautifully illustrated and detailed book featuring more than 20 of Künstler's Civil War/Confederacy-themed paintings; including eight that had not been previously published. Künstler discusses his historical and artistic inspirations and research for the paintings; and a number of details; sketches; and studies are featured and discussed for each painting. It was fascinating to me to read about the history of the events Künstler depicted; as well as about the artistic process of creating each work.Künstler was especially fascinated by Generals Lee; Jackson; and Longstreet; and a number of the paintings feature those men; usually preparing for or engaged in battle. But there are also paintings that evoke moods and emotions: the sad; tender farewell between a soldier and his wife; a weary patrol plodding through the snow past a candle-lit church at Christmas; an excited group of townspeople cheering on their not-yet-defeated "boys in gray." These are dramatic; emotional works of art that are also meticulous in their historical accuracy.Yes; the book is quite small in size; but I found it riveting.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. If you're not sure what this book is about;read this first!By Jill MylesI just ordered this for my dad for christmas and was surprised by it. If you are looking for a large; beautiful coffee-table book filled with Kunstler's civil war paintings; you might want to keep looking. This book is TINY! I was completely surprised. It's no more than 5 or 6 inches tall. I was expecting a 12 inch book; or even larger; and to my surprise it's almost palm-sized. So the fully glory of his wonderful paintings seems somewhat diminshed when you have to squint to make out details. That was the most disappointing part of the book. Other than that; Mort Kunstler was a wonderful painter; and this book has a rather full gallery of his works depicting Southern troops in the Civil War; along with a few blurbs talking about the history behind the piece; etc. Still a good buy; even if I'm disappointed in the size of it.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Civil War art from the Dean of Civil War ArtistsBy Robert HarroldThis collection of painting by Mort Kunstler is a very excellent book. The book contains 12 different paintings; and a brief description by the artist of the research and details that went into each painting. Details about the uniforms; the people; and also that he actually visited each location at the time depicted in the painting; just to study the actual light as it would have appeared at that moment in time. As a student of the Civil War; I found this set of books to be outstanding; and most informative. I have always enjoyed Kunstler's work; and now have a much great appreciation of his search for authenticity.
