Mountain Men: The Remarkable Climbers And Determined Eccentrics Who First Scaled The World's Most Famous Peaks

audiobook Mountain Men: The Remarkable Climbers And Determined Eccentrics Who First Scaled The World's Most Famous Peaks by Mick Conefrey; Tim Jordan in History

Description

In the months after her husband's death; Martha Washington told several friends that the two worst days of her life were the day George died—and the day Thomas Jefferson came to Mount Vernon to offer his condolences. What could elicit such a strong reaction from the nation's original first lady? Though history tends to cast the early years of America in a glow of camaraderie; there were; in fact; many conflicts among the Founding Fathers—none more important than the one between George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. The chief disagreement between these former friends centered on the highest; most original public office created by the Constitutional Convention—the presidency. They also argued violently about the nation's foreign policy; the role of merchants and farmers in a republic; and the durability of the union itself. At the root of all these disagreements were two sharply different visions for the nation's future.Acclaimed historian Thomas Fleming examines how the differing temperaments and leadership styles of Washington and Jefferson shaped two opposing views of the presidency—and the nation. The clash between these two gifted men; both of whom cared deeply about the United States of America; profoundly influenced the next two centuries of America's history and resonates in the present day.

Product was shipped quickly and came in as described.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. MEN AND THE MOUNTAINSBy Joseph H. RaceOutstanding and really clarifies 'how they can find men to conquer the mountains'. This matches the man to the mountain; and realize the hardships that they endured before all the modern maps and equipment came along. A wonderful history of remarkable climbers that were pioneers that scaled the world's famous peaks; from Everest to K-2. You probably have heard of Dr. Cook; Wilson; Wiessner; Houston; et.al.? Now you can match the man to the climb and discover how many are still likely buried in the snow and ice of the high mountains. You can go on the expedition from your lounger in front of the hot roaring fireplace.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Vivid; exciting; pioneering mountain climbs!By Francis TaponOVERALL: As a mountaineer; I found it hard to put down this book; which gives wonderful details about some famous (and not-so-famous) pioneering climbs.STORIES: It covers a guy with no climbing experience trying to solo climb Everest. A deceiver called Cook who claimed to be the first on Denali. Two amazing trips up K2. The conquering of the Matterhorn.PROS: Great detail; good pacing; good prose.CONS: Needed more photos and maps; which would have made it a 5 star book.CONCLUSION: You don't have to be a mountaineer to appreciate this book. You just need to have an interest in history and mountain climbing.
