Owens' fascinating study explores the personality and behavior of the slave within the context of what it meant to be a slave. Based on a variety of plantation records; diaries; slave narratives; travelers' accounts; and other items bearing on the slave's experiences in his relationships toslaveholders; it concentrates on the years between 1770 and 1865.

A good spring board for further reading for non Muslims.1 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A tool for peaceBy Ira M. EdwardsTo round out a study of Muhammad; read also WHY WE WANT TO KILL YOU by Walid Showbat. As the Hadiths were written; much was claimed about what Muhammad said and did. Sometimes the writer's purpose was to justify his own opinions and actions. There were many contrary statements. Some glorified the prophet; and some wrote about his lust and violence; as if admiring his power. So; there is ample material for anyone to make Muhammad into either saint or devil; with little reliable history. I gave this book five stars; not for accuracy or objectivity; but because it has potential as a valuable tool for world peace; Though written for non-Muslims; it could be widely distributed in Islamic nations. If they believe what this book claims about Muhammad; and as it is their doctrine to emulate the Prophet; it would greatly improve the behavior of these people; in families; communities and nations. If our Defense and State Depts.; instead of drones; would send 100 million copies of this book to the Mid-East and Southeast Asia; it would transform these nations into peace-loving democratic altruistic nations; exporting love instead of terror.4 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Total waste of moneyBy Vicki HahnThis is simply a fluff piece of distorted and inaccurate information about Muhammad. The few peaceful verses highlighted in the Koran about there being no compulsion in Islam were abrogated in later verses; the book justifies Muhammad's treatment of his wives; says nothing about him marrying Aisha at the age of 6; even though she was promised to another man; tells nothing of the over 600 people he had beheaded; or the poets and women he had killed. It talks about how he loves children and tells people to take care of them but doesn't mention that he outlawed adoption because he wanted the wife of his adopted son. (and he got her) The book claims Islam spread by peace and they were never the aggressor; which is false. It claims the civilizations they overthrew loved living in subjugation and paying jizya (protection money). They take credit for all the innovations of the people living under subjugation and claim Muhammad was even an environmentalist. The only thing I found accurate or good about the book are the pictures. A complete waste of money!
