PDF Muslim Women in America: The Challenge of Islamic Identity Today by Yvonne Yazbeck Haddad; Jane I. Smith; Kathleen M. Moore in History

Description

Offering the clearest and most comprehensive examination of the conflict that transformed the United States; the Atlas of the Civil War reveals the full dimensions of this historic confrontation. Surpassing the scope of any previously published single-volume work; this atlas pairs expert scholarship with bold mapping to vividly depict the ebb and flow of destruction and reconstruction.Divided chronologically into five sections; the Atlas of the Civil War illustrates every significant battle and military campaign while simultaneously considering the important social themes that shaped the country during the same time period. All theaters of war in which armies fought and maneuvered will be covered in detail and; marking a major departure from other atlases; this volume will devote substantial attention to the nonmilitary elements of the struggle between North and South. Maps of population; economic development; elections; transportation networks and patterns of enlistment illuminate the intersections between the home front and the battlefield; demonstrating with specially commissioned cartography that no war is fought in isolation from the rest of society. Approximately forty three-dimensional maps of terrain and troop movements add yet another unique element to this ambitious reference.Written by two esteemed Civil War historians; Kenneth Winkle and Steven Woodworth; the pithy text is accented with black and white photography and illustrations that bring key characters and settings to life. Pulitzer-prize winning author James McPherson; guides the project; setting the tone of the atlas with a foreword and five shorter essays the open each of the sections.

Sub-parBy miroBought this for a grad level class and as an American Muslim woman (convert) I am disappointed in the lack of research put into this book. They would make broad statements about American Muslim women and then just use one instance or story to "prove" that statement. You cannot paint such a broad picture about American Muslim women. A lot of things that they said about us are particularly negative and things that I have found to be false based on my experiences; the mosques I've been to and from the experiences of my many Muslim American women friends. It also seems as if the author approves of and supports the ridiculous and unacceptable actions of Amina Wadud and those like her; when 95% percent of practicing Muslim women are disgusted by what she has done and says about Islam.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very GoodBy MargieVery in depth look at Islam and women in America. Still reading it; but it is well written and informative.0 of 3 people found the following review helpful. a liar is not a good person.By Greg AbdulTo Muslims: do not buy this book. You notice all the hijabis on the front cover? That's a joke and a lie. The whole book is about how women don't have to wear hijab. I don't mind that opinion; but then be honest and put a Muslim not wearing hijab on the cover. They do this lie because they know; non Muslims won't buy from them. Muslims who study Islam and know fundamental Islam believe the hijab is fard. Where does that leave a bunch of Muslims who want other Muslims to read them; but have decided they won't follow the ulema? They put a bunch of conservative women on their cover and then go on to write a book saying women don't really have to dress like that. My issue is not hijab. My issue is the cover. It makes the book a like. I guess when it comes to this one; you can't judge a book by its cover.
