I've wanted this book to be published by someone since I first heard about the eccentric Colonel Cross and the 5th New Hampshire.The authors did a pretty fair job and for that I am grateful. The publishers however; did not. My copy of the book is badly flawed - the battle of Fredericksburg is missing; the pages are mis-numbered and it took me a while to sort it out.That said; I would still buy it. The individuals who made up the 5th NH were men whose story needed to be told. Hearing that story in their own words was worth waiting for.A word of warning to newcomers to this type of history book - the men (and women) of that age make us look pretty silly in comparison - in a lot of ways. Reading their words can be a humbling experience. They were often more literate; more skilled in fundamentals; and more willing to stand up for something. Even the boys from deep in the country (North and South) put us to shame - their spelling could be better but their hearts were good.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Unfortunately my family member who died at Gettysburg on July 323rd was a lowly soldier and this book focuses mainly on the "important" people who served; the officers and the well connected people. It is appropriate that our family member was one of the ones who was buried in an umarked grave probably shared by several other ordinary soldiers. After all only family remember this men. HamptonAs a college History Professor; I found this book to be a very interesting telling of the 5th. As a resident of NH; there is not much credit given to him and his men and their work in the Civil War; particularly at Gettysburg. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in learning more about a specific unit.
