David Chandler has long been regarded as the greatest interpreter in modern times of the Napoleonic Era. His studies of the campaigns and tactics of Napoleon Bonaparte have set the standard for all subsequent writers. In Napoleon; Chandler places the emperor's 60 battles in the context of his entire life; beginning with his boyhood in Corsica. All of Napoleon's campaigns and endeavors are covered; with an eye to their influence on the later history of Europe; and with particular attention to Napoleon's characteristic use of commanders from humble backgrounds.

ShepherdLike the vast majority of Osprey books; this is an excellent military history overview with concise text and wonderful illustrations. This is an important and informative reference work for me as I research my ancestor; Martin Louis Charpentier; who served in the 4th French Dragoon regiment before emigrating to Pennsylvania after the wars were over.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Uniformly excellentBy Pierre a' FusilJust noticced the less than full-throated reviews here; so...This title; part of a series on French Napoleonic Cavalry by Emir Bukhari; is singular in it's treatment. It not only provides much more information about organization; tactics; and regimental history than many other Men-at-Arms series titles; but it also has all the good information about uniforms you would expect. It includes a brief but clear section about the confusing Foot Dragoon formations of the early Empire. The artwork; by the late; great Angus McBride is excellent. Many other period illustrations are included herein. If I could find any fault; it might be that this book does not delve into the French Dragoons operational apex in Spain. There they came into their own as true mounted infantry; capable of using all their potential successfully. I have owned this title for years; and gone back to it often for insight into the Dragons et Lanciers de L'Empire. Highly recommended.
