The exploration of the Pacific in the eighteenth century by western Europeans has an enduring fascination for both specialists and a wider public. Within this field; Cook's voyages have a particular appeal: they include exciting elements of danger; scientific investigation; encounters between different cultures. The essays in this volume take as their point of departure Cook's first voyage in the Endeavour (1768-71); they re-evaluate its political and social context; look at the expectations and outcomes of the event; and focus on the scientific and cultural issues emerging from this and subsequent Pacific voyages.

KongNapoleon's Line Chasseurs is one of the earlier books published by Osprey Publishing in 1977 as part of its Men-at-Arms series. It is written by Emir Bukhari and beautifully illustrated by the late Angus McBride. The one that I bought is the 1979 reprint. The one being shown here is a much later reprint. As far as I know; except for the cover and back pages; the content has remained unchanged in the reprints. This book; with 40 pages; is organized into several topics: Organization; Dress and Equipment; Saddle and Harness; War Records and Regimental Histories (1st to 21st regiments); The Plates (A-H; with each plate including illustrations of three soldiers); and Sources (this is very brief with only 11 references). Pages 39 and 40 include descriptions of the plates in other languages. The most useful illustrations that I found are the four on pages 28 and 29 showing the different formations of a squadron in different orders. This is similarly done in Napoleon's Hussars; another book in the same series published around the same time. In fact; in one to two discussions; Napoleon's Line Chasseurs references Napoleon's Hussars and Napoleon's Cuirassiers and Carabiniers; so I would recommend that you to get these other books too. There are black and white illustrations of the uniforms; arms and equipment; and horse harnesses. The A to H Plates are in color and are beautifully done. This is a good book for the modelers and wargamers who want a quick reference and a basic guide. I would prefer the book to include a bit of discussion on the functions of the Chasseurs; and how exactly that they differ from those of the more flamboyant Hussars; but at such an inexpensive price; I am not complaining.
