The encounter between Jews and Greeks marked one of the most revolutionary meetings in the ancient world; for in that encounter politics; economics; culture; and religion changed dramatically. Victor Tcherikover; who devoted his entire scholarly life to the study of the Hellenistic period; offers here a benchmark assessment of that encounter. In this reprinted edition of his most famous work; including a new preface by University of Chicago Professor John J. Collins; Tcherikover uniquely combines "analyses of two of the most intriguing episodes of Jewish history in antiquity: the events that led to the Maccabean rebellion and the struggle for rights in Alexandria in the first century C.E." (from the preface).

A Review of Leadership In the PeninsulaBy Self-StudyAn excellent study of leadership in the Napoleonic Peninsular War; focusing the personalities; strengths; weaknesses; successes; failures and infighting among the Marshals; and with Joseph; showing also how they fared when not under the leadership of Napoleon. It demonstrates how successful leaders can fail to rise to the next level challenge; and how Napoleon failed to create an organizational structure that could make his Marshals and Joseph effective and successful. (It is interesting to consider to what degree this was intentional to limit their power.)This concise review of The Napoleonic Peninsular Campaign and leadership contains many lessons for the modern age from Iraq to Afghanistan; and perhaps the Ukraine; or anyone interested in leadership in business or other aspects of life. As a non-academic interested in leadership; politics war; it was fascinating. It had some of the flavor of "The Guns of August"; by Barbara Tuchman. From the dj--"Out of Napoleon's twenty-six Marshals; over half served in the Peninsula at one time or another--including Ney; Suchet; Murat; Marmont; Massena; and Soult. This exciting reappraisal of their victories and defeats in the Peninsular Campaign; written with an unusually profound grasp of both French history and military strategy; relates the performance of the Marshals to one another and to their previous and subsequent careers."0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
