First published in 1976; this book is the first detailed examination of the history of British sea power since A.T. Mahan's classic The Influence of Sea Power on History; published in 1890. In analyzing the reasons for the rise and fall of Great Britain as a predominant maritime nation in the period from the Tudors to the present day; Professor Kennedy sets the Royal Navy within a framework of national; international; economic; political and strategical considerations. To this new paperback edition the author has added a new introduction that brings the discussion of naval power up to date; with special emphasis on today’s enormous U.S. Navy as the prime contemporary example of the use of naval forces to wield global influence.

It like all of his books repeats some of the things that made him a legend but I was impressed that he had even with his limited education to understand the merits of surrounding himself with men who were. He in my opinion with me having served in the 5th Special Forces as a Captain for 6 years appreciate not only his tactics but his wisdom in understanding and supporting his men. The man though limited in formal education was absolutely brilliant in leadership and warfare. This was due to his "ESCORT" on many occasions. Highly recommended.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Read It AgainBy Dean NorthcuttAfter reading this book I wanted to start over and read it again in case I missed something. The book is captivating and written in a mannor that makes you imagine you are riding with Forrest. The book points out some of the genious of Forrest and helps you understand why the great German Field Marshall Erwin Rommel came to Tennessee to study the tactics of Forrest. The last part of the book is a little slower reading; but it will give you an idea of how dedicated these men who rode with Forrest were to their General and leader. Their loyalty to Forrest was a display of unity that you might think is reserved for only immediate family members.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great BookBy B. HighfillNathan Bedford Forrest's Escort And StaffI have a number of books on Nathan Bedford Forrest and I wish I had purchased this one first. Mr. Bradley gives a short review of previous books written by others on Forrest and the reviews were enough that I would not have purchased some of the books that I have and I have expanded my list of (want) books. This book was short and to the point and very informative. It gave a more personal feeling by getting to know more about the escort and staff of Forrest. I would highly recommend this book to other fans of Nathan Bedford Forrest and of Civil War History.
