In January 1944; the Allies decided to land at Anzio in order to overcome the stalemate at Cassino. This amphibious landing has become one of the most controversial campaigns of World War II (1939-1945). Questionable decisions by the Allied leadership led to three months of World War I-style trench warfare; and the entire beachhead suffered from continuous German observation and bombardment. Vividly describing each thrust and counter-thrust; this book takes us through the agonizing struggle as each side sought to retain or regain mastery. It shows how Anzio proved to be a stepping stone not only to Rome but also to the liberation of Italy.

Phil EnglishThis is a truly marvelous naval history which not only provides a carefully documented account of the actual engagement at Aboukir Bay; but also a rich account of the navies; their practices; tactics and weapons; and a sense of the experience of war at sea in the age of Napoleon. The author provides compelling insight into the character of Lord Nelson and his unique hold on the British imagination during the conflict; as well as the strategic significance of the battle. This account serves to put in context the contemporary coverage of the battle; correcting the record but also quantifying the tactical superiority of Nelson and his team of captains. The strategic importance of Nelson's victory- protecting the vulnerable Indian underside of the British Empire-is explored with insights as useful as those of the battle itself. For any lover of the period; and of the British Navy; this book is a real treat that offers the reader a well crafted and beautifully documented history that brings to life the battle; as well as one of the most colorful periods of modern European history. I recommend it with enthusiasm.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Definitely worth picking upBy JetpackNelson is clearly up there on the list of interesting historical figures. Arguably the greatest Admiral ever; Nelson was also a very flawed person. Which makes for one heck of a read. Nelson took chances in battle; which normally paid off. He also; arguable; died at the right time in his life.7.805 locations. Picked up while free.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. ExcellentBy T.
