Though written thousands of years ago; the Bible continues to fascinate and guide readers today. This book explains how the Bible that we use came to be in its present form. Wegner introduces the Bible and its arrangement; describes how the various books were collected into a single canon; examines how the Bible was passed from one generation to the next; explores how and why early versions were produced; and discusses the myriad of English translations. Numerous charts; photos; and illustrations are included.

It is hampered by two issues:First; because of the tight hold that the King family has upon the words of Dr. King; no actual prayers have been included. While this is no fault of the author (who has a fully written book consisting mainly of the prayers of King) he has been prevented from publishing them; reading the prayers would have greatly added to the book.A second; and; some will argue; less substantive problem is that the work presents MLK as a full blown liberal in terms of biblical scholarship. While it is true that Dr. King would at times raise questions about such items as the virgin birth; the nature of the resurrection body; etc.; there are at least some of those who traveled with him or knew him well who believe that Dr. King was simply asking questions to sharpen the faith and apologetic skill of his friends. That is; simply because Dr. King raised questions about the virgin birth did not mean that he rejected the doctrine.Aside from the criticisms above; this is a wonderful work. It is well worth reading both historically and devotionally.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Too VagueBy cadenceThis book is vague. Yes; private and public prayer were an important part of Dr. MLK Jr.'s life; but what does that mean? There are some generalities like Dr. MLK Jr. recommended prayers for others rather than prayers for self; but that's still vague. The vagueness is not directly the fault of the author because he did not have the right to print up Dr. MLK Jr.'s words and prayers. There are a few examples; but the book is mostly a mass of generalities... such as...."Knowing that there were problems in the world that could not be solved by social activism or the advance of human knowledge; particularly as they relate to the hearts of the people; King developed the habit of joining fellow activists to pray. Thus; he demostrated how prayer could become a positive force in dealing with the larger social maladies at work in our lives."(Chapter 6; pg. 100)Prayer helps the activists when the activism fails? What does that even mean?Interestingly; there are also almost no Bible quotes. The author is surprised when other Christians have different Biblical interpretations than King; but this idea is not developed. The Bible has many terrible philosophies such as pro-slavery (exodus 20:20-21); pro-rape (deuteronomy 22:28-29); killing non-believers (mark 6:11).... and there are many more such quotes. People could readily have a more cruel version of Christianity that would also be based on Scripture. So it seems obvious that many Christians would not agree with Dr. MLK Jr.'s interpretation of the Bible.I was interested in Dr. MLK Jr.'s prayer life from a psychological rather than a religious perspective; but other than learning that prayer was essential to his daily life; there were not many details.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. We always think of MLK; Jr as an activist but; he was first a minister and you really can't separate the two.By So YouAsked! It makes one know that it is because of his religious foundation that MLK;Jr. was able to accomplish so much in his short time on earth.
