The history of National Socialism as a movement and a regime remains one of the most compelling and intensively studied aspects of twentieth-century history; one whose significance extends far beyond Germany or even Europe. Featuring ten chapters by leading international experts; this volume presents an up-to-date and authoritative introduction to the history of Nazi Germany. Opening with an introduction delineating the challenges this period of history has posed to historians since 1945; Nazi Germany continues on with chapters that explain how Nazism emerged as an ideology and a political movement; how Hitler and his party took power and remade the German state; and how the Nazi "national community" was organized around a radical and eventually lethal distinction between the "included" and the "excluded." Later chapters discuss the complex relationship between Nazism and Germany's religious faiths; the perverse economic rationality of the regime; the path to war laid down by Hitler's foreign policy; and the intricate and intimate intertwining of war and genocide. The volume concludes with a final chapter on the aftermath of National Socialism in postwar German history and memory.

A Five Stars Journey through Scientific New York!By Beverly24New York; one of the greatest cities of the world; is known for Wall Street; Broadway; the Garment District; the Empire State Building; the Statue of Liberty; Central Park; the Metropolitan Museum of Art and on and on. But; too easily overlooked not only by tourists; but by some locals too; is that New York is also one of the great world capitals of science -- spanning life-changing innovations and discoveries from its earliest roots to the present day. This book fills a gap that had been left empty by so many other profiles of this great city.Istvan Hargittai and Magdolna Hargittai; two eminent chemists who; although residing in Budapest; have been walking the streets of New York since 1969; have written a classic masterpiece that focuses on the broad sweep of VISIBLE signs of science that permeates the city. The scope of their subject matter encompasses scientists; technology; inventions; medicine; scientific institutions; universities; explorers; monuments; botanicals and way beyond. The authors have such sharp and keen eyes for detail and hidden gems that even seasoned New Yorkers who pride themselves on their knowledge and grasp of the city's history and sights will discover new facets and sites previously unknown to them. A new world opens up when you learn that so much of what you casually passed by on the street contains a rich and deep story within itself which will enthrall and captivate you once you learn its history and meaning.Every page is filled with photos; many taken by the authors; which illuminate the fascinating and enjoyable-to-read text. Read it cover to cover or open it up to any one section and take it in.This extraordinary book which shines the spotlight on scientific New York is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful view of New York and its scientific tradition and historyBy Bob MackayThis is a completely wonderful creation! Ostensibly about New York; but actually a celebration of the lives of so many great individuals; not only scientists; but also writers; doctors; travelers and others who have contributed so much to modern life and understanding. Many names I have known since childhood; but also so many new figures I had not encountered before. Each person is illustrated with an interesting biography; often completed with a more personal anecdote about their life; rendering them in a much more human light than a dry description of their discoveries and work might do. The accompanying photographs are splendid. For the historical figures; these are often statues or cameos on walls (or gargoyles!); but for more contemporary characters; the photos are of the individuals themselves. The Hargittais seem to have met everyone! This being an account of a single city; many of the players overlapped with one another; attending (or founding) the same schools or universities; tutoring one another; or simply sharing a building. These interconnections are fascinating. Some of the group photos are a complete 'who's who' of the foundations of science. There is the recurring thread of academics escaping Germany and eastern Europe. One gets the feeling of the ongoing tradition of scientific and academic excellence and of a city that is a melting pot of ideas.Greatly recommended!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful book for more than just scientistsBy Bill F.I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this wonderful book as a gift. While I live in Arizona; and not in New York; I am regularly in "the city" and this book is so lovingly written that it actually makes me wish that I'd spend more time In New York when I visit. I usually go in; do my business; and leave ASAP; but in reality there is so much scientific lifeblood in New York -- so many fine institutions; so many top-class scientists and scientific employers. It's really one of the world centers for science; and the two authors of this book did a great job in making that point. Their photographs are excellent and this is a book that anyone would enjoy; not just scientists.
