Description

Airman Down (originally published in 1955 as Valley of the Shadow) is the gripping story of the downing; capture; and subsequent escape and rescue of Captain Ward M. Millar; 7th Fighter-Bomber Squadron; U.S. Air Force; in 1951 during the Korean Conflict. While on his 30th combat mission over Korea; mechanical problems resulted in a fire on his F80 Shooting Star jet; forcing Millar to eject from his burning aircraft. Chinese troops quickly reached Millar; now suffering from two broken legs; and carried him away from inbound rescuers; who were unable to locate Millar. It was three months later; on September 10; 1951; following Millar's internment; escape; and evasion of capture for three weeks; that he was rescued by helicopter south of Pyongyang. Also airlifted to safety in Seoul was a sergeant in the North Korean Army who befriended and aided Millar during his evasion of the enemy.

True stories are always good. Fictional stories around true people; places and major events are even better. And this Writer is so good you feel like you are right there watching it happen. Now; I'm part of the Lucky Generation in that the year we started pulling out of Vietnam I graduated High School. I entered the Armed Forces in 1974. I missed everything. Whew!Including the next conflict. But reading this story reminded me of just how proud I was to serve (I did not agree with Vietnam WAR or why we were there) and just how much I had to live up to. And just how Grateful we all need to be towards people like G.Sargent Slate and everyone of our military. This book gives you an idea of just how large the sacrifice they made was and how high the cost all the young men was made. It real life and just as scary.A great read!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sgt. Slate cont.By M. ClineThis is the continuing story of Jessie Slate from World War Two; Korea; and Vietnam and his love of family and love of the Corps; and the elder NCO'S who watch out and help teach Jessie about Life and spirituality; and to be a better person.recommend this book and all Johnnie Clarks' books to those interested in the Marine Corps and the Fifth Marines and Machine Gunners in particular.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. They are all written well and good reads until this oneBy gcan63This is the third book of Mr. Clark's that I have read. They are all written well and good reads until this one. The spelling and grammatical errors at times seemed that they had to have been done on purpose; they were so frequent and so far off. Had to re-read a lot of sentences to make sense of them. This is really too bad as Johnnie Clark; in my opinion; is a great writer.
