I especially enjoyed his early chapters that centered on the rise of ...By John FThe author presents an extremely readable book on the abolition movement in Upstate New York; centering mainly on the Syracuse; Utica; Rochester areas. I especially enjoyed his early chapters that centered on the rise of the movement through the Second Awakening; mainly the ministry of Charles G. Finney. I also had no knowledge of the Oneida Institute and Beriah Green and the role it played in the biracial education of so many of the abolitionists. The cover for the book is a daguerreotype of the 1850 Cazenovia Convention held to protest the Fugitive Slave Law. The photo is mesmerizing. In it are pictured whites; African-Americans; women and men with no segregated sense to it. A photo representing equality of race and gender.Overall; very readable and informative.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Excellent account of unique period of our historyBy D. L. H.Having grown up in the Finger Lakes of NYS; and having had a GG-grandfather who was part of the Underground RR; I was delighted to find this historical account of a movement and a time in Central NYS that shaped the Nation. "North Star" is an academic read; but well worth it for anyone with related interests.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy Karol Kucinskigraet book
