Okinawa: The History of an Island People

ePub Okinawa: The History of an Island People by George Kerr in History

Description

One Palestine; Complete explores the tumultuous period before the creation of the state of Israel. This was the time of the British Mandate; when Britain's promise to both Jews and Arabs that they would inherit the land; set in motion the conflict that haunts the region to this day.Drawing on untapped archival materials; Tom Segev reconstructs an era (1917 to 1948) of limitless possibilities and tragic missteps. He introduces an array unforgettable characters; tracks the steady advance of Jews and Arabs toward confrontation; and puts forth a radical new argument: that the British; far from being pro-Arab; consistently favored the Zionist position; out of the mistaken--and anti-Semitic--belief that Jews turned the wheels of history. Rich in historical detail; sensitive to all perspectives; One Palestine; Complete brilliantly depicts the decline of an empire; the birth of one nation; and the tragedy of another.

Perfect starting place for Okinawa's historyBy CustomerI first found this book in the local library on the Marine Corps base I was stationed at in Okinawa; Japan. It was a great read; for anyone interested in the history of Okinawa at least; and as I researched Okinawa for my college degree I realized the author is one of the leading authorities on Okinawa's history. I highly recommend this book.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. One of the few; but is still the best histories of OkinawaBy DaMacGuyThere are few books in English of the history of this island state. Okinawa has a proud history; despite being dominated by the Chinese; Japanese; and Americans. It was an independent kingdom for hundreds of years and the Okinawan people are still proud of that heritage. I read the first edition of Kerr's book and still have it somewhere on my shelf. This newer edition adds some post-WWII information and deals with the issues of modern Okinawa. A must read for anyone looking beyond the resorts; beautiful beaches; and omnipresent military bases of present day Okinawa.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
