I just want to add on a personal note that as a post-doc in cardiovascular research at Hopkins I had the pleasure of both passing Dr. Carson in the hallway and hearing him give a presentation on being a "complete" doctor. You might think it a small thing to pass someone in the hallway; especially at Hopkins; but even at his relatively young age then; Dr. Carson was a rock star. Yet; unlike so many in academia who walk the halls like Colossus/Colossi; Dr. Carson walked the halls with equal parts confidence AND humility. He did NOT shuffle his feet; but he did not puff out his chest; either. As anyone who's read "Healing Hands" knows; when he first got to Hopkins he was often treated like an orderly. Amazingly; he didn't have a problem with it. Stepping into the other person's shoes (how many of us can really do that?) his assessment was: "What else might the nurse think? She'd never seen an African-American surgeon before." I mention it because Dr. Carson has an uncanny ability to see all sides of a situation--a rare and precious skill. So when he says things are out of control; may I suggest that we should all listen. He is FAR from a conservative clap-trap. He has come up from adverse poverty (worst possible conditions: no father; sporadic mother; and so much anger as an adolescent that he almost killed another boy) and understands both tiers of this country (plutocracy and the rest of us) as he's lived at both extremes. I only wish that everyone who is reading this book had a chance to see the man in action--his brilliance; his confidence; his passion; his compassion; his humility. They wouldn't dare to write some of the garbage of the one "star" reviews. "Unique" doesn't began to describe him. He is a once in a decade (or longer) blend of brains; guts; and heart. I hope we are clever enough to understand this and leverage this to our collective benefit.828 of 889 people found the following review helpful. Racist Liberal Reviews; Forced Me To Write This!By Clarence OliverI'm a liberal. I voted for Obama; twice. I'm a lifelong democrat. Growing up; I had anger problems; much like Ben Carson did; and his book Gifted Hands help me find a more peaceful and empowered root to peace and success in my life. Ben Carson has; with his past works on his life; have been amazingly aiding. So of course I read on with his books.I disagree with some of his points. But listening to the reviews against him. They're condescending; they're insulting; they're telling him that he should keep his mouth shut; that he should remember his place; that he shouldn't forget about the education that he was given. This man; his story; is one of hard work. His contribution to medicine is legendary. This man was not given anything. And even if you disagree with his political views; that doesn't diminish the man nor his contributions to society.But this is a book review and this is a 5 star book.Let me make this clear; I don't agree with everything that he writes. I'm pro obamacare though I think it could be done better and I don't believe doing nothing is a proper structure either. If he has a new plan; I'd love for him to go into it in more depth; and I'd be happy to consider his solution.Political Correctness he nails completely. I don't want to be tolerated. I don't mind being insulted. You have the right to be offended in this country; it's not a right to never be offended. Our colleges have it wrong; they're silencing free thought; hindering the growth of minds to think outside the box; to ask controversial questions; to engage in conversation with people they disagree with. This is why everyone we have discussions with now a days with disparate views becomes a yelling match.This book supports itself with a strong structure of common sense; basic morality; and a willingness to compromise and listen to opposing views. Dr. Ben Carson's clarion call and plan to save the American Republic!By Dr. Miguel A. FariaI began to follow the meteoric career of Dr Ben Carson for decades after reading an article about him in Readers Digest many years ago. Dr. Carson was the first surgeon to operate successfully on conjoined twins at the head in 1987. He has since retired from the field of Pediatric neurosurgery; where he has achieved so much -- researching; teaching; operating; and in alleviating the pain and suffering of his young patients. Nevertheless; he has continued to contribute and excel as a Best Selling author of five other books and writing pieces for the Washington Times; GOPUSA; and Fox News. He is also a fervid spokesman of family traditional values and an American patriot concerned with the problems of affecting this nation; politically; economically; morally.In February of 2013; he gave a speech at the National Prayer Breakfast. With President Obama nearby; Dr. Carson criticized the direction the country has taken; indirectly criticizing the President's domestic policies. With this book he hones in in his observations and follows through exposing the ills afflicting American society; deteriorating moral values; political correctness; and the government attempts to take over the health care system.As a result; Dr. Ben Carson was singled out for IRS auditing (harassment) by the Obama administration last fall. He came out clean! Dr. Carson had criticized ObamaCare in October of 2013; while speaking in Washington; D.C.; stating that ObamaCare "was about control;" and went on to quote the Russian communist founder of the Soviet Union; Vladimir Lenin; who admitted; "Socialized medicine is the keystone to the establishment of a socialist state."For Dr. Carson this passionate; informative and excellent book was necessary: "the future of my grandchildren is in jeopardy because of reckless spending; godless government; and mean-spirited attempts to silence critics left me no choice but to write this book." I agree. And he has done a great job putting his thoughts and ideas into words that every American can read and understand.In this latest book; "One Nation: What We Can All Do to Save America's Future;" (2014); co-authored with his wife; Candy -- Dr. Carson makes novel but common sense proposals to get us out of the morass in which we are mired. It does not matter whether one is a Democrat or Republican; we are all Americans and must get together to solve our problems and preserve our American Republic! His book is written well with passion; conviction; and statesmanship. Let me state for the record that I have known of Dr. Carson's great surgical achievements as they developed; but have never had the pleasure of meeting him. Hopefully; one day I will.
