One of the Few; The Proud; The Marines

audiobook One of the Few; The Proud; The Marines by Thomas Hitchcock in History

Description

The Civil War was the most dramatic; violent; and fateful experience in American history. . . . Little wonder that the Civil War had a profound impact that has echoed down the generations and remains undiminished today. That impact helps explain why at least 50;000 books and pamphlets . . . on the Civil War have been published since the 1860s. Most of these are in the Library of Congress; along with thousands of unpublished letters; diaries; and other documents that make this depository an unparalleled resource for studying the war. From these sources; the editors of The Library of Congress Civil War Desk Reference have compiled a volume that every library; every student of the Civil War—indeed everyone with an interest in the American past—will find indispensable. —From the Foreword by James M. McPherson; Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom

I first met Gunnery Sergeant T.J Hitchcock at around 0200 while standing at the position of attention on a set of yellow footprints behind the receiving barracks at MCRD San Diego. He was the Senior Drill Instructor; or Platoon Commander; of recruit training platoon 2037. As a drill instructor; I regarded him as an exemplary Marine…. Fair; but as tough as was necessary to take a boy and turn him into a Marine; over the years have thought of him often. Thanks to this book I was able to track him down and yesterday; June 9 2013……..45 years later; I had the privilege of visiting him at his home; to let him know what an important influence on my life that he was and is; to pay my respects and to have him sign my copy of his book. It was an excellent visit. If you are a Marine……….read this book. Written in the vernacular; it is like sitting down and listening to the Gunney tell the story of a life of service and dedication to his Country and his Corps…..the character of the man shines through. At nearly 81 the Gunney is still active and still every inch the Marine. I look forward to seeing him again.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy Stephanie L. I'm kind of a stickler for grammar and that's why I gave it four stars. I have actually met this man.
