Patriot Militiaman in the American Revolution 1775–82 (Warrior)

ePub Patriot Militiaman in the American Revolution 1775–82 (Warrior) by Ed Gilbert; Catherine Gilbert in History

Description

A good argument could be made that the Battle of Actium was the most significant military engagement in Roman history. On a bright September day; the naval forces of Octavian clashed with those of Antony and Cleopatra off the coast of western Greece. The victory Octavian enjoyed that day set the state for forty-four years of what would come to be known as the Augustan Peace; and was in no small way the dawn of the Roman Empire.Yet; despite its significance; what exactly happened at Actium has been a mystery; despite significant labors and effort on the part of many classicists and military historians both amateur and professional. Professor Lee Fratantuono re-examines the ancient evidence and presents a compelling and solidly documented account of what took place in the waters off the promontory of Leucas in late August and early September of 31 B.C.

Patriot and Loyalist militia ; sometimes backed by Continentals or British regulars; often resorted to brutal tactics to defend their homes and families; and to carry the fight to their opponents. "Patriot Militiaman in the American Revolution" is a new Osprey Warrior Series entry; focused on the Patriot militia in South Carolina in 1775-1782.The authors are Ed and Catherine Gilbert; who were in the happy position of exploiting their own family histories for some of the content of this book. The level of detail; especially with respect to the backcountry militia; is exceptional. The authors provide a fascinating glimpse into the clan-based society that provided most of the fighting men for the militia; and a fair-minded appraisal of their capabilities and limitations. The narrative includes the significant fights such as King's Mountain and Ninety-Six; and many of the smaller ones such as Huck's Defeat and Blackstock's Plantation. The accompanying illustrations; especially the artwork by Steve Noon; are of a high standard; providing useful information on clothing and equipment. This Osprey book overlaps in coverage with some others of the Warrior Series dealing with the Revolutionary War and Colonial America; but is highly recommended for its very interesting content.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
