Patterns of World History: Combined Volume with Sources

DOC Patterns of World History: Combined Volume with Sources by Peter von Sivers; Charles A. Desnoyers; George B. Stow in History

Description

The 1960s were a time of explosive religious change. In the Christian churches it was a time of innovation; from the 'new theology' and 'new morality' of Bishop Robinson to the evangelicalism of the Charismatic Movement; and of charismatic leaders; such as Pope John XXIII and Martin Luther King. But it was also a time of rapid social and cultural change when Christianity faced challenges from Eastern religions; from Marxism and feminism; and above all from new 'affluent' lifestyles. Hugh McLeod tells in detail; using oral history; how these movements and conflicts were experienced in England; but because the Sixties were an international phenomenon he also looks at other countries; especially the USA and France. McLeod explains what happened to religion in the 1960s; why it happened; and how the events of that decade shaped the rest of the 20th century.

The text is well researched and very readable and is superbly organised. Questions are posed at the beginning of chapters to help to direct the reader and there are more questions at the end of chapters to help the reader to consolidate his/her understanding. There are also timelines; maps; diagrams and photographs which complement the text perfectly. This book is ideal for students of history as well as for anyone with an interest in understanding how the world developed the way it did.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good condesed book of world history.By President of Pope Benedict XVI Fan ClubIts a large history textbook. Read the whole thing for my two world history classes and goes into world history since God created the Heaven and Earth to Modern which is hard to compact into a single book but Peter von Sivers does a good job of doing it.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
