I own several of his books; and they are all outstanding; well written with great detail. One of the best things about his books is that while they are written for the average person to understand; they are also not "dumbed down" and they are entertaining as well. Dr. Tabor is one of a small handfull of experts on the historial bible; especially the early years leading up and shortly after the death of Jesus and his followers. If you are interested in the historial Jesus; Paul; their followers; or just ancient history; you can't go wrong with any of Dr. Tabor's books; this one included. If you enjoy ancient history or theology as much as I do; you'll find yourself re-reading this and all of Dr. Tabor's books often. As for the deliivery; the book was promised on April 28th and was recieved on time. While the book came in the usual cardboard box for books; the corners was badly damaged and the dust jacket was crumpled in the back and torn on corners. I immediately returned the book and promptly recieved a replacement free of mishandling.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Highly Recommended. Very readable.By Avid ReaderThe author is able to present very important ideas in a clear and readable fashion. While I knew Paul was the source of Christianity; and that the Disciples brand of Judaism faded into history; he makes a clear case on how this happened and who Paul really was. If you think Mormons are a bit strange for following Joseph Smith's unusual stories and beliefs; hang onto your hats. This history lesson will change the way you think about Paul; Christianity; the gospels and the early church.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. James Tabor On St. PaulBy CustomerAs a lector at Catholic masses once a month it was neat to be reading early chapters of this book in the morning and then later reading the Second Lesson at a mass which highlighted Saint Paul's letters to the "Gentiles". The book provides a perspective of what Saint Paul's mission was; I had no idea he never met Jesus. The observations about the "Last Supper" and the burial of Jesus were startling to say the least. Important perspective covered is role of women in the early years of Christianity. Some points should be balanced by comments from Catholic scholars.
