In this; the re-titled second edition of Society and Culture in the Slave South; J. William Harris selects the most recent and original scholarship in the field of the antebellum South published since 1992; when the first edition appeared. The present volume illustrates both the continuities and new developments in antebellum Southern history; starting from the work of Eugene Genovese and Elizabeth Fox-Genovese; and moving into work that challenges their traditional reading of the slave South as a "paternalist" society. The collection also features an introduction to the historiography of the slave South; and a "Guide to Further Reading."

MORE A HISTORY BOOK MORE THAN PERPETUA'S PASSIONBy RENE RODRIGUEZTHIS IS A WELL RESEARCHED HISTORY BOOK ABOUT THE ROMAN EMPIRE AND CHRISTIAN MARTYRDOM AROUND THE YEAR 200 AD. UNFORTUNATELY; PERPETUA'S DIARY IS SEGMENTED THROUGHOUT THE BOOK; MAKING THE SUBJECT MATTER MORE ABOUT THE HISTORY THAT SURROUNDED THE STORY THAN THE DIARY ITSELF. PERHAPS THE TITLE IS MISLEADING; THE BOOK IS EXPENSIVE AND NOT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING; BUT IT WILL BE A GOOD HISTORICAL REFERENCE .2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I recommend this. I bought this to replace a copy I misplaced. Deserves a place on your bookshelf.By Steve DigbyThis is an excellent description of the earl Christian Martyrdom and the inspiration these brave people of faith gave to others. The church truly is "built on the blood of the martyrs'" Reading this book may help one to better appreciate the early martyrs as well as call us to stand with then many martyrs of our current time.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Very well writtenBy DZThis is one of the best historical reads ever. It paints a complete picture of early Christianity in what was then known as Carthage. Of course this is about the Christian martyrs Perpetua; Felicity and the 3 men that were all sacrificed
