Indespensible for researching the underground railroad in NYBy Paige BucherschrankThis trilogy of Tom Calarco books; this one; The Search for the Underground Railroad in Upstate New York; and People of the Underground Railroad: A Biographical Dictionary; contain an incredible amount of detail on the Underground Railroad in upstate New York while at the same time being very readable. His own interest comes across in his books. There is a great bibliography in the back of the book if you feel compelled to do more research on your own. The book is already arranged like an encyclopedia but there is an index so you can find topics in the sidebars and within entries.There are so many books with New York in the title or description that turn out to be only about New York City. The people traveling the Underground Railroad had to get through the whole of New York STATE to get to Canada and travel through upstate New York was different from treading the sidewalks of New York City.I wish the price were lower ...
