M MillsOne of the greatest interpreters of the life of our greatest POTUS Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) is Harold Hozer. In this new splendid anthology of poetry; newspaper and diary reports; trial testimony of the conspirators and memoirs the story of that horrible night at Ford s Theatre April 14; 1855 is revealed in all its gory hideousness. That night was a tragedy for the nation. Among the famous commentators are such worthies as Ralph Waldo Emerson; Herman Melville; Walt Whitman; Wendell Phillips and such staunch defenders of the South as diarist Mary Chesnut of South Carolina. One of the most powerful orations of the period was given by African-American Frederick Douglass. Also moving was the report of Fanny Seward who was present the night her father Secretary of State William Seward was almost killed by conspirator Lewis Paine. We even have entry to diary entries made by John Wilkes Booth and Mary Lincoln s sad note of grief to a friend. The first part of the book deals with the actual assassination and the trackdown and fate of the conspirators. The second part of the volume looks at the ways Americans mourned Lincoln. This fine entry in the Library of America series is an excellent resource which could be used with profit in courses on the assassination; Civil War; Abraham Lincoln or Civil Rights. Add this one to your history bookshelf!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. BradenNot mostly newspaper clippings; but a detailed story of the participants as told in their letters and historical analysis. The 2nd half of the book is commentary from contemporary notables; not worth that much; but the first part of the book is well worth the price. You get a feel from the middle of the book toward the end of who Lincoln was as a person; and he was quite the man. He was intelligent; merciful; kind; normal; decent man; which makes me whine now when I hear people lament "this is the party of Lincoln" when discussing Trump. He is an abomination in terms of what the party once stood for--in fact most of the GOP today be would beyond Lincoln's ability to comprehend vis a vis their obstructionism; hatred; racism; sexism; etc. He must be flipping over in his grave.
