Rebels Against Slavery: American Slave Revolts

audiobook Rebels Against Slavery: American Slave Revolts by Patricia C. McKissack; Fredrick L. McKissack in History

Description

For over 100 years; people have debated where Vinland is located. Thisbook describes what sagas said; where Vikings landed; what interactionthey had with Natives; and what legacy they left Indians and earlyEuropean colonists. Fred Brown uses 33 years of studying Viking accountsof journeys to America; genetic information; archaeological evidence; OldNorse language remnants; and sailing experience to pinpoint yet anotherViking incursion in New England. His detective work to find Vinland isbrilliant and masterful."While you and I play golf; Fred Brown spends his off-hours researchingour past. After reading about possible areas visited by the Vikings anddescriptions of America in Viking legends; in 1976 Fred ventured out byboat using Viking descriptions and archaeological finds in that theorizedarea. He investigated documents from English settlers in the 1600s aboutthe light-skinned Indians; metal and smelting use by early Indians; oddlinguistic similarities to northwestern Europeans; and a peculiar resistanceto tuberculosis among Indians; genetically common to Europeans. Heconcluded; and is not the only researcher to do so; that the Narragansettand Wampanoag Indians of the region encountered by early Englishsettlers were; in fact; descendants of mixed Indian/Viking populations."-Editor; Diane Holloway; Ph.D..

Important read for everyone-especially Blacks in America-if you're not fortunate to have family that's aware of their history; teachers who teach your history and a mind eager to know your history-as I was; you won't know anything past Harriet Tubman; Pocahantas;Sacagawea; Frederick Douglass; Dr. King and a few other influential Blacks in American history taught in most schools-they're even cutting back on those nowadays. Buy this book as a gift for the little brown boys and girls in your life. (Great addition to your library along with "I'm Not Your Negro.")Captures the true meaning of fighting for liberty and "by any means necessary"......unfortunately; the fight continues from shackles of economic; educational; social inequalities cast upon people of color in American-;most sadly the Black Americans who built this country and paved the way for all who came after to enjoy an economically booming country financed through their blood; sweat; and tears.....also known as slavery0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An excellent brief overview of the history of slave revoltsBy Glenn D. RobinsonA quick overview of slave revolts in the North American and Caribbean areas from 1522 (on the son of Christopher Columbus's plantation) to 1860. Each chapter is a brief history of one or more people that had the courage to seek freedom being either stealth or by fighting. Sprinkled throughout are stories of Abolitionists; Congressmen and Journalists that fought to get laws repealed; changed and reversed in order to abolish slavery. This book is brief as it covers 320 years or so and many different incidents. It serves as a foundation for future research on the people featured. Because this covers a wide range of people; it is not possible for the book to go into great depth and that is fine. A well done book. Worth the read. I learned a great deal.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Telling of the Resistance Movements in AmericaBy K. C. HarrisGreat for young people. Short sections that cover the major slave rebellions in the Americas. You don't find this information in many text books. The telling is not from a defeated standpoint but from the telling of real people who had the courage to rebel in the face of almost certain death. A testament to the spirit of freedom that captive African maintained intact regardless of their circumstances. I highly recommend this book and all the other McKissack books of African American History.
