Description

Exploring the motivations of Indians involved in the fur trade; the contributors to this volume challenge the spiritualist interpretation set forth by Calvin Martin in Keepers of the Game; which dismisses the lure of European goods―the power and leisure that firearms and other tools afforded the Indians―and instead attributes the Indians' willingness to overkill wildlife to the epidemics that decimated their ranks; that not only shattered their religious bonds with game but also unleashed a furious revenge against the animals.

Very inside view of the life and times of the Confederate mindset and unique perspective on the culture of war from an honest and real experience. A wonderful picture of a man torn by conflict and rooted in a Christian culture and mindset. This man was a gentleman and a truly courageous soul. He reflects on the lighter moments and the atrocities with the warmth of his southern upbringing. It is a real eye opener and an interesting read. He claims to be a man of little education but his pen negates his claim. He makes our intellect sound trivial in his raw observations. I was particularly impressed by the way they handled a Union soldier caught steeling food. They turned him loose because of empathy with his plight. Gave me a whole different perspective on these men. This man happens to be my wife's great grandfather and I read one of the first additions. If you like true history and Civil War it is a must read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. 15th Ala MemoirBy Fred M M; MDA very readable memoir of a member of the 15th Alabama Infantry Regiment. Honest comments from a man who lived through the boredom of camp life and the drama of battle; and the craziness of it all; and came home to recall and reflect on his adventures. A must read for Alabamians who read memoirs of The War Between The States!3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Recollections of War Times :By W. A.
