African-American Slave Medicine offers a critical examination of how African-American slaves medical needs were addressed during the years before and surrounding the Civil War. Drawing upon ex-slave interviews conducted during the 1930s and 1940s by the Works Project Administration (WPA); Dr. Herbert C. Covey inventories many of the herbal; plant; and non-plant remedies used by African-American folk practitioners during slavery. He demonstrates how active the slaves were in their own medical care and the important role faith played in the healing process. This book links each referenced plant or herb to modern scientific evidence to determine its actual worth and effects on the patients. Through his study; Dr. Covey unravels many of the complex social relationships found between the African-American slaves; Whites; folk practitioners; and patients. African-American Slave Medicine is a compelling and captivating read that will appeal to scholars of African-American history and those interested in folk medicine.

This is a brief look at some of the history of the Kentucky Confederates but mostly a pictorial introduction to the subject with some excellent photos of the men who fought. It's not an extensive history; but I didn't expect that; so I wasn't disappointed.I think amateur genealogists with family ties to the subject or just Civil War buffs will enjoy the book. However; as I stated; it's not extensive and is not a book of lists of names of men who fought for the Confederacy from Kentucky. I've found online resources for that. The picture quality is good and explanations of the uniforms are detailed. The pictures are of individuals (many officers); as well as some camp photos and some of veterans' gatherings after the war. I believe reenactors; costumers and others interested in the uniforms and grooming of the era will find this a valuable resource for their studies.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Esoteric History Of Kentucky ConfederatesBy J. SicklesThis is a book about Kentuckians who fought for the Confederacy. It is loaded with photographs of some of the finest troops of the Civil War. It is predicated on what images were available in various archives. There is a short biography of each man. There was no bad unit among Confederates from Kentucky-all were elite. All of these men had to leave their home state in order to fight for their cause. This book is a wonderful testimony to that cause.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fabulous gift.
