Roanoke: Solving the Mystery of the Lost Colony

ebooks Roanoke: Solving the Mystery of the Lost Colony by Lee Miller in History

Description

Robert S. Kim contributes to a fuller understanding of Asia in World War II by revealing the role of American Christian missionary families in the development of the Korean independence movement and the creation of Project Eagle; the forgotten alliance between that movement and the Office of Strategic Services (OSS); called Project Eagle.Project Eagle tells the story of American missionaries in Korea from 1884 to 1942. They brought a new religion; modern education; and American political ideals to a nation conquered and ruled by the Japanese Empire. The missionaries’ influence inextricably linked Christianity and American-style democracy to Korean nationalism and independence; meanwhile establishing an especially strong presence in Pyongyang. Project Eagle connects this era for the first time to OSS-Korean cooperation during the war through the story of its central figures: American missionary sons George McCune and Clarence Weems and one of Korea’s leading national heroes; Kim Ku. Project Eagle illuminates the shared history between Americans and Koreans that has remained largely unexamined since World War II. The legacy of these American actions in Korea; ignored by the U.S. government and the academy since 1945; has shaped the relationship of the United States to both North Korea and South Korea and remains crucial to understanding the future of U.S. relations with both Koreas.

While the author quotes reams of historical sources; she manages to keep the subject anything but dry. Instead the book reads almost like a mystery novel. I can see this as being a great start to get upper elementary or high school students interested in history.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It's a good read.By DiannVery interesting story. I had only heard a little about the settlement and that no one knew what happened to the people. This book goes into what was going on in England during the time John White and his group of people prepared and left to sail to America; his return to England for help and his voyage back to America to find the settlement abandoned. Also it discusses what may have happened to the people of Roanoke using historical information and supposition. It's a good read.8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. The Lost Colony is FoundBy CatManFirst off this was written as a mystery and not as a historical narrative. The writer states this up front so it was not surprise. In my opinion it would have been better as a narrative. That's the reason I gave it four stars and not five. But aside from that this was a very good book on the lost colony of Roanoke. The writer did some fine research. It had to be incredibly difficult to dig up facts from something happened over 500 years ago about a time that is nothing like today. The research about the Indian nations in North America is fantastic. The writer does come up with some well documented and well reasoned conclusions as to what happened these people. We will never know the full answer but with this book we do know much more than we ever did. It is well worth the time to read id you want to know more about this lost colony and the times that surrounded it.
