HolbenBy choosing to leave out a good deal of the juicy gossip; doing quite a bit of summarizing; and moving somewhat thematically rather than reign by reign; this book can be a bit difficult to follow at points; but the overview it gives is solid and useful; perhaps more for students and scholars than the ordinary reader. For something a good deal more fun; but probably less insightful; you might consider Absolute Monarchs: A History of the Papacy; by John Julius Norwich.1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Saints and Sinners: A history of the PopesBy Peter J. McnelisAn interesting and well written papal history which attempts to put 2000 years into 474 pages. Obviously; some facts naturally get missed and others get overemphasized; depending on the bias of the author. Eamon Duffy is a 'Progressive'; a 'Modernist' and it shows. Nevertheless; and with that knowledge; one can appreciate the effort he has made to encapsulate and document so much material in so little space.1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Once again better than I expectedBy William HeidelbergPretty concise as far as I know. Been wondering about all of the popes for years. Kinda thought that some had no history to tell as they were mostly old men who had a short papacy. Liked the links in this book to the politics of some of the times.Got a chuckle out of the reference to St. Napoleon. Worth reading.
