Not only is it difficult to find publications with current information; it is difficult to find textbooks that cover all aspects of serving military families. This book is no exception. The text has great statistical data; good personal stories to introduce the chapters; and robust chapters and coverage of some topics (Military Culture; Veterans and Families; Policies and Programs that Support Military Families). But there are some gaps. My students do not need four chapters covering military culture and life. My students do need to understand the ugliness of combat and what military members experience during and after the war zone so they have a frame of reference for their social work practice. The chapters covering the effects of war on service members and families are presented in a very sanitized and academic way. The final chapter; Serving Military Families; is just plain silly; considering the editors state the book is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
