Settlers: The Mythology of the White Proletariat from Mayflower to Modern (Kersplebedeb)

audiobook Settlers: The Mythology of the White Proletariat from Mayflower to Modern (Kersplebedeb) by J. Sakai in History

Description

A vital and illuminating look at this profoundly important (and often perplexing) historical moment; by former Financial Times chief foreign affairs columnist Ian Davidson. The French Revolution casts a long shadow; one that reaches into our own time and influences our debates on freedom; equality; and authority. Yet it remains an elusive; perplexing historical event. Its significance morphs according to the sympathies of the viewer; who may see it as a series of gory tableaux; a regrettable slide into uncontrolled anarchy―or a radical reshaping of the political landscape. In this riveting new book; Ian Davidson provides a fresh look at this vital moment in European history. He reveals how it was an immensely complicated and multifaceted revolution; taking place in different places; at different times; and in different spheres; and how subsequently it became weighted with political; social; and moral values. Stirring and dramatic―and filled with the larger-than-life players of the period and evoking the turbulence of this colorful time―this is narrative history at its finest.

It's like "A People's HIstory" except it comes right out of ...By John KawakamiA mindbomb that I read a while back; but comes into its own if you use it to understand how Trump has become elected president of the United States. It's like "A People's HIstory" except it comes right out of the Black power and revolutionary union movement.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. North America's Foundation and Its Reverberation Through HistoryBy Beatrix LoThis book is the only proper and thorough allocation of the events that allowed colonialism to thrive in North America. It accurately portrays a class of European emigrants seeking to own land of their own; opportunistically using the free labor of Black; Brown; Red; and Yellow people to build and farm for them. It becomes increasingly evident that North America would not exist today if it weren't for the slaves it relied on. And this is only the first tenth of this piece. By accurately defining the foundation on which North America was built; using primary documentation; statistics; and many other reliable sources; J. Sakai depicts the continuation of Euro-American settler colonialism today.5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Essential reading for anyone concerned about ending oppression and exploitation ...By Michael NovickEssential reading for anyone concerned about ending oppression and exploitation. Very challenging and I think too pessimistic but lays out a history that must be grappled with to prevent future betrayals and defeats.
