Some of the reasons for the type of government we have nowBy Modupe HendricksI read this e-book Shays’ Rebellion: The History and Legacy of America’s First Domestic Uprising and found it interesting. Essentially the colonies had to raise taxes to pay various debts including those from the Revolutionary war. The problem was that there was minimal hard currency available to poor farmers and others. Many of the colonies were unable to pay the soldiers that fought for them with hard currency. The Shays rebellion came about because Massachusetts attempted to force the farmers to pay in hard currency instead of allowing bartering. The interesting thing was that the colonies couldn't afford to pay salaries to their militia and the rich banded together to pay for the militia. I've only described a small piece of the book but because of this and for other reasons; the elected representatives of the colonies understood that it was necessary to create a central government with specific powers. This book is worthwhile because it explains the need for the type of government we have now.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
