PDF Ship Island; Mississippi: Rosters and History of the Civil War Prison by Theresa Arnold-scriber; Terry G. Scriber in History

Description

This collection of writings by Confederate naval participants aptly tells the story of the hardships and trials faced by the men of the South on the seas and waterways. The narratives include fond memories of skirmishes in beloved ships; recollections of bitter defeats; dispatches of officers claiming victory; gritty excerpts from journals; accounts of cunning blockade dodges and carefully worded reports of the loss of a ship. Each entry lends valuable information and color as a modern reader tries to understand just what these men faced.

Excellent book about Ship Island; MSBy HistophileI was looking for a book that included the names of Union and Confederate military personnel who were buried on Ship Island. The cemetery disappeared years ago. The UDC added plaques for the Confederates buried on the island; but there wasn't a comprehensive list for Union or other burials. According to one source; over 200 Union burials happened in the cemetery; but did not include a list. Find-A-Grave only lists a handful of the Union burials and is far short of 200+.A great benefit of the book is it lists the name(s) of individuals and includes as much information as could be found. In some cases; it gives last known location and cemetery information. Complexion; hair color; home town; and other items of genealogical interest. If you had someone who served on the island; was a POW; or prisoner; this book is a gold mine.I considered the e-book version instead of the paperback version I did purchase; but am loathe to pay as much; or more; for an e-book than a printed copy. Should the e-book go on sale for a lot less; I would pick it up.I purchased two copies of the book; one for my personal library and one for Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very Informative BookBy Jerry MilnerI was looking for some specific information on an ancestor and found it in the book. The book's description of the history and conditions there during the Civil War also helped me to understand my ancestor's experience a lot better.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. its stored in a old desk nowBy ibboredladyI only bought this cuz i was doing my family tree and someone was in the book...so i bought it to save
