So They Will Know: A Korean War Memoir

DOC So They Will Know: A Korean War Memoir by Sinclair W Stickle in History

Description

Moving upstream on the Irrawaddy broad tide; the ocean liner approaches the city of Rangoon; and the gold-leafed pinnacle of the celebrated Shwe Dagon pagoda welcomes it as it rises magnificently in the morning sunlight. The traveler is intrigued with the claim that this ancient shrine has been standing for three thousand years. This injects an anachronism; since Buddhism was founded not more than twenty-five centuries ago and something less than that for its lodgment in Burma. But no one seems to be embarrassed nor stultified by what; for them; is merely a slight chronological inaccuracy; which derives from the time-clocked occidental measurements; for theirs is that timeless eternity of the East.

This book helps you to understanding what happens to kids when they go off to war. It has some honesty that honestly is hard to take. The fact that the author details no John Wayne heroics leads me to believe his accounts of the reality of his war. It is difficult but we need to hear it. "So They Will Know" seems to be written to the descendants (they) of the author which adds to its gentle delivery of war's hard truths. It is an easy read and a compelling one. It is important for all of us to not forget what ALL the costs of war are. I read this because there is little about the Korean War. I am glad I did. And a note of gratitude should be mentioned here: Mr. Stickle challenges the entire stalemate argument to which I have been acquainted since grade school. I agree with him; it was not a stalemate. If we had lost there would be no South Korea. The UN's goal was to preserve South Korea not to gain North Korea given to the Soviet Union after WWII. Compare North Korea today to South and tell me how that was a stalemate!! Thank you for your service Mr. Stickle and thank you for sharing!!!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. the horrible sights; the putrid smellsBy Marc HitchinsSgt. Stickle is to be appreciated; admired; and thanked for sharing his military experiences and educating both current and future generations. He made history and conveys this vividly in his descriptive and informational writing. He is a master story teller; with events flowly clearly and quickly. He shares everything; from Basic Training; thru the horrors of the Korean War; to Military Discharge. The uninitiated will learn the protocols and vocabulary of drill sergeants; the duties of "KP" or "GI Parties"; the meaning of 'volunteerism'; the realities of rifle ranges and bayonet drills. The initiated will reflect and smile.Sgt. Stickle is clear in describing his deadly Korean patrols and in surviving his 'close calls'. He discusses the constant knot in the gut; the fear of both the known and unknown; the frightening deafening sounds; the horrible sights; the putrid smells; and the endless dust and dirt. Ultimately; it leads to a developed acceptance of the inevitable outcome. In sharing the combat zone; some of his writing reflects it's intensity. While other deadly engagements are regarded with the non-chalance of seasoned veterans. Throughout his writing Sgt. Stickle cites the bonding of he and his fellow GI's. Frequently; he also shares their scathing and morbid humor. It is rare we have the opportunity to read an eye witness account of our first "police action"; the Korean War. This book clearly describes what it truly was...A WAR.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Korean War memoirsBy Christine BeanThe author is a friend and fellow Korean War veteran of my late husband. My husband and another veteran are mentioned in the book.I found it to be very interesting and informative. I learned many things about war; even though the author and my husband had shared many experiences at reunions. It will be enjoyed by any service members; present or veterans; or anyone interested in history.
