PDF South with "Endurance": Antarctic Photographs by F.Jack Hurley in History

Description

Claims abound that Saudi oil money is fuelling Salafi Islam in cultural and geographical terrains as disparate as the remote hamlets of the Swat valley in Pakistan and sprawling megacities such as Jakarta. In a similar manner; it is often regarded as a fact that Iran and the Sunni Arab states are fighting proxy wars in foreign lands. This empirically grounded study challenges the assumptions prevalent within academic as well as policy circles about the hegemonic power of such Islamic discourses and movements to penetrate all Muslim communities and societies. Through case studies of academic institutions; the volume illustrates how transmission of ideas is an extremely complex process; and shows that the outcome of such efforts depends not just on the strategies adopted by backers of those ideologies but equally on the characteristics of the receipt communities. In order to understand this complex interaction between the global and local Islam and the plurality in outcomes; the volume focuses on the workings of three universities with global outreach (al-Azhar University in Egypt; International Islamic University of Medina in Saudi Arabia; and al-Mustafa International University in Iran) whose graduating students carry the ideas acquired during their education back to their own countries; along with; in some cases; a zeal to reform their home society.

Extreme.By Jeffrey E EllisSOUTH WITH ENDURANCE is the official photographic record of the extraordinary expedition to the Antarctic in 1914 under Sir Ernest Shackleton. Frank Hurley was hand-picked to photograph and record the discovery of the South Pole and to chronicle the brave works of the intrepid explorers and events of the mission.Having read the accounts of the ENDURANCE expedition; I couldn't wait to see the pictures...of the ice; the beauty; the men; dogs; ship; of the hardships and victories of this ill-fated expedition. I was not disappointed. This collection of photographs is breath-taking; beautiful; and spectacular. At a time when the science of photography was in its early stages; Hurley captured hundreds of images which became the official record and bore witness to the heroism and extreme conditions which threatened the lives of the 28 explorers.9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. BeautifulBy Kindle CustomerI bought this book after I read about it. The photographs provide the proof of who these spectacular men were. Frank Hurley makes it more real than any words could describe. As you look at the photos you realize the beauty but also the desolateness of where they were. There was nothing there! Blue sky or white snow; with occasional grey clouds. Three colors to live with for over a year. There are beautiful portraits; animal photos and great shots of the ship that could have done the job; but sadly didn't. Amazing; truly amazing. There are even a few color pictures that Frank took.
