He was the youngest major general in the Confederacy. He fought in the first battle of the Civil War and was still fighting after Appomattox. In between; he led what U. S. Grant later called the worst drubbing I ever got; at Cold Harbor. He was even rumored to be Lee's hand-picked successor as commander of the Army of Northern Virginia.Yet General Robert F. Hoke was never the subject of a full-length biography until Daniel W. Barefoot came along. In 1996; John F. Blair; Publisher; released Barefoot's General Robert F. Hoke: Lee's Modest Warrior to great acclaim. In April 2001; Blair will proudly release a paperback edition of this important Civil War biography.Barefoot argues that his subject was ignored by biographers for so long because of the greatest of Hoke's qualities of character - his sincere modesty. Hoke refused to use his fame from the war as a tool for political or material gain. He even refused the governorship of North Carolina when it was virtually handed to him. Instead; he quietly went back to work; hitching his war-horse to a plow. A leader in the rebuilding of North Carolina's economy; he did not talk about the war or even attend veterans' reunions; insisting that Southerners needed to put the war behind them and move on.Hoke's father died when the boy was only seven. Robert studied briefly at the Kentucky Military Institute; then returned home to take responsibility for the family businesses at the tender age of 16. When the war began; Hoke received a second lieutenant's commission. Within three years; he was a major general. Barefoot recounts Hoke's meteoric rise; as well as the skill and daring in battle that brought it about. He provides grippingaccounts of the Seven Days; Second Manassas; Antietam; and Chancellorsville. His account of the Confederacy's last stand against Sherman has been called among the best from a Confederate perspective.

Native American Myths And PropheciesBy Jeff MarzanoThis book provides some Native American interpretations for the mysteries of the past and prophecies for the future. One re-occurring theme is the Earth is out of balance due to humanity's activities and destruction of the natural environment. Some of the people in this book claim they are breaking a long held silence to warn the entire world of a coming cataclysm that could result from people polluting the planet and destroying everything for greedy purposes. There's a lot of incidents in the book where people are interacting with flying saucers and mysterious entities in the spiritual realm. Whether these entities and phenomenon are really what these people think they are is a question that will probably cross many people's minds. Some of the elders tell the younger Native Americans to be more cautious before talking but the kids sometimes don't listen to them. The Native Americans believe in many strange things like shape shifting werewolves and Big Foot. I don't doubt that such things really do exist. They talk about the weird subject of alien abductions where malevolent beings create hybrid lifeforms. This matches up with other legends about the Anunnaki who were also involved with manipulating the human DNA. There's always evil gods in mythology. Some other subjects they talk about in the book are the pyramids; ancient cultures like the Aztecs and Mayans; the initiation rites; and astrology. All of these subjects seem to be interrelated in very mysterious ways. The last chapter is about a guy who has lead a very strange and turbulent life. He was a Green Beret who served in Viet Nam and developed a very powerful drug habit. Some of these drugs were supplied by his handlers such as amphetamines which increased his awareness and energy level. This guy reveals information which he says is classified such as how the CIA imported heroin into the U.S. from the Golden Triangle to finance their covert projects in other countries. He kept his mouth shut when he got arrested for drug trafficking so the CIA got him off the hook for a 40 year prison sentence. While I don't agree with everything in the book there is I believe a core of truth to these ancient legends about subjects like Atlantis and the mythological gods and goddesses. The pyramids clearly show that the ancient myths aren't just stories people made up to explain nature. There's a big missing piece of the puzzle for our understanding of the ancient past.Edgar Cayce's Story of the Origin and Destiny of ManEdgar Cayce's AtlantisThe Mystery of the Crystal Skulls: Unlocking the Secrets of the Past; Present; and FutureThe Giza Power Plant : Technologies of Ancient EgyptInitiationInitiation in the Great Pyramid (Astara's library of mystical classics)Edgar Cayce's Secrets of AstrologyUfo...Contact from Planet IargaEncounter in the Pleiades: An Inside Look at UFOsThe THREAT: Revealing the Secret Alien Agenda0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
