I was a former submariner and found the writing extremely interesting and rewarding.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great Read for an Average Joe; A Must for a SubmarinerBy M. L. GourlieIf you want to peak into the inside of a US fast-attack nuclear-powered submarine during the Cold War years and experience the sights; sounds and relationships of one of America's most elite "Special Forces;" you will find this book not only enlightening; but fascinating and not what you may have envisioned from reading submarine adventure books or watching submarine movies. Gannon McHale brings alive the unique relationships among submariners that form life-long bonds among these men. For those who served aboard US fast-attack nuclear-powered subs during the Cold War Years; this book is a must-read. For me; it brought back memories long lost since my early 1970's tour aboard the same USS Sturgeon that McHale served on (I came aboard shortly after the author completed his tour). Great read with very casual; easy writing style. The book inspired me to go see and touch the sail of this once proud lady that is on static display at the Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport; WA.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Stealth Boat; Fighting The Cold War in a Fast-Attack SubmarineBy Tango AlphaFor those that have "Been there - Done That" this book will bring back the memories of everything from being on watch; listening for "First Call" to Liberty Call in some foreign port. For those that wonder the meaning of Hazerdous Duty; you will get the full picture in this tale. This runs from the serious stuff; to humorous happenings. Another excellent source of what submarine duty is like is the book "Blind Mans Bluff."
