Survivors of Slavery: Modern-Day Slave Narratives

DOC Survivors of Slavery: Modern-Day Slave Narratives by Laura Murphy in History

Description

In the first fifteen years of the twenty-first century; a large number of films were produced in Europe; Israel; the United States; and elsewhere addressing the historical reality and the legacy of the Holocaust. Contemporary Holocaust cinema exists at the intersection of national cultural traditions; aesthetic conventions; and the inner logic of popular forms of entertainment. It also reacts to developments in both fiction and documentary films following the innovations of a postmodern aesthetic. With the number of witnesses to the atrocities of Nazi Germany dwindling; medialized representations of the Holocaust take on greater cultural significance. At the same time; visual responses to the task of keeping memories alive have to readjust their value systems and reconsider their artistic choices. Both established directors and a new generation of filmmakers have tackled the ethically difficult task of finding a visual language to represent the past that is also relatable to viewers. Both geographical and spatial principles of Holocaust memory are frequently addressed in original ways. Another development concentrates on perpetrator figures; adding questions related to guilt and memory. Covering such diverse topics; this volume brings together scholars from cultural studies; literary studies; and film studies. Their analyses of twenty-first-century Holocaust films venture across national and linguistic boundaries and make visible various formal and intertextual relationships within the substantial body of Holocaust cinema.

A well-written and engaging platform for many voices; balancing challenging stories of slavery and survivorshipBy Danielle GoldenbergI definitely enjoyed this book by Laura Murphy. This book constituted assigned reading in a “collaboration against human trafficking” course I took this spring. The most effective elements of the book were; of course; the telling of survivors’ stories (usually through interviews; or through survivors' own narratives). Though the stories can be difficult to read (pretty shocking injustice); they provide the most jarring wake-up call regarding what goes on in the realms of both labor trafficking and trafficking in many different parts of the world. Many diverse voices have been captured and given a platform through this book. It’s valuable for anyone who wants to understand more about modern slavery. I think each chapter of the book was also framed by thoughtful and well-reasoned introductions by the author. I was particularly interested in the authors’ rhetorical analysis of survivors’ stories; as well as what additional meanings we can glean by understanding the historical context and justifications for slavery and how these strategies are perpetuated by slaveholders today. Finally; Laura Murphy offers an optimistic look at survivorship and life after slavery; a former child slave recounts his later academic success; pursuit of higher education; and anti-trafficking activism; included in detail and from many different perspectives; is the case study of an Indian community; almost totally enslaved within a mining industry; that is later able; through communal resistance and facilitation by an NGO; to escape enslavement and build up its own; new; self-supporting mining community. These are just some of the interesting stories that Laura Murphy shares; and it’s done in an engaging way that I think anti-trafficking experts would approve of.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. My favorite part of this novel was the discussion at the ...By CustomerLaura T. Murphy’s “Survivors of Slavery” is a powerful and moving collection of personal stories told by survivors of human trafficking. Often times; we see articles about human trafficking; but many of us don’t realize the severity and horrors of human trafficking. Murphy offers background information and analysis on various problems surrounding human trafficking; and provides first person narratives/interviews told by survivors from both sex and labor trafficking. As a student who has spent some time reading articles and novels surrounding human trafficking; it was a completely different approach to learning about the various atrocities that these survivors had to overcome. My favorite part of this novel was the discussion at the end on how we; as readers; can become abolitionists to fight against human trafficking as I found myself uneasy realizing that everyday; thousands of victims go through similar treatment as the narratives in this book. Overall; this collection of narratives is a very informative and saddening truth about the horrible crime of Human Trafficking.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Brings a human element to understanding human traffickingBy Student16In this collection of stories; Laura Murphy explores the experiences that survivors of human trafficking have had during their time in imprisonment. Murphy describes the details of each survivors’ story in a way that really draws the reader into how the mindset of somebody who is forced into these situations works. Each story unveils a different facet of the crime of human trafficking and allows the reader to really see the complexity of the crime and the barriers that victims must overcome to become survivors. Because these stories are based on real experiences; the real human faces of this hidden crime and really brought to life and allows readers to see them as people that not much different from themselves rather than just statistics. What could have made these stories stronger is the inclusion of photographs of the places where these victims lived or of the victims themselves throughout the book. Images can often make a much stronger impact than pure words; but I do realize that privacy and security most likely were in issue in publishing these accounts.
