Detailed overview of nearly a millennium of Western European historyBy Doug ErlandsonWill Durant's "The Age of Faith" (the fourth volume in the Story of Civilization series) covers nearly a millennium of European history (350-1300 AD). It traces such matters as the development of the doctrine of the church through the Sixth Ecumenical Council; and also details the rising influence of th papacy in Western Europe. But it is more than a history of the church during that period. It discusses the degeneration of the Western Roman empire from the sacks of Rome until the birth of the Holy Roman Empire. Events during this time in France; the Iberian and Italian Peninsulas; and what is today Great Britain are also discussed; as is the rise of scholasticism and the Waldensians and Albigenses. All in all; this is a very detailed overview of the period.
