A great overview of hard fighting Texas Brigades and Regiments during the Civil WarBy Joe Owen"Texas In The Confederacy" by Colonel Harry McCorry Henderson (Naylor Company; 155 Pages; 1955) is an excellent overview of the history of the major brigades from Texas that fought for the Confederate States of America (CSA) from 1861 to 1865. Colonel Henderson provided a great overview of the various brigades from Texas that fought in all the major theaters of the Civil War. In this short book at 155 pages; he gives the history of the regiments; the commanding officers of the brigades and various regiments and their history in battle. In the book the chapters are:Chapter 1: Hood's Texas Brigade Chapter 7: Terry's Texas RangersChapter 2: Walker's Texas Division Chapter 8: 26th Texas Cavalry (De Bray's Regiment)Chapter 3: Silbey's Arizona Brigade Chapter 9: 2nd Texas Infantry RegimentChapter 4: Ross' Texas Cavalry Brigade Chapter 10: The 1st Regiment; Texas Heavy Artillery; and the Battle of Sabine PassChapter 5: Green's Texas Brigade Chapter 11: Regiments; Battalions and Batteries From Texas in the ConfederacyChapter 6: Granbury's Brigade Bibliography and IndexColonel Henderson provides a brief but detailed and accurate history of how these brigades and regiments were formed and gives the overall history of their actions in battle over the four years of the Civil War. Colonel Henderson sought to make this book as comprehensive as possible and he even provides every organization; whether predominately or partially Texans; and whether the units served in theaters of wars outside of Texas or was a uni of state troops.Texas troops fought hard in every theater of the Civil War either inside or outside of Texas and at the same time as the Colonel gives details that Texas had problems such as a long coastline; a long frontier to be guarded one from the Union Army and the other from Indians. According to Colonel Henderson; the best account of Texas is the battle of Sabine Pass on September 8; 1863 when regiments on the Texas Coastline successfully fought off a Union invasion. He gives a full account of this is in the "1st Heavy Artillery Regiment" chapter. He also gives the history of the unsuccessful invasion of the southwest (New Mexico/Arizona Territory) by Henry H. Silbey and his troops.Colonel Henderson did an outstanding job for bringing together all these brigades and regiments into one fascinating and accurate book. This is an EXCELLENT starting point for anyone who wants to know more about the various Texas brigades and regiments who fought in the Civil War. it is not bogged down into uninteresting or meticulous details that can make it boring. I recommend this for the beginning reader of the Civil War who wants to know more about Texas infantry and cavalry brigades; or for those who want a good summary of Texas soldiers and brigades. A GREAT and "HANDY" book about the soldiers and brigades of Texas during the Civil War! A GREAT READ!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. TexasBy avidreaderI had not read much about Texas in the war. Sure I rad accounts of individual units here and there at battles but not an overall view like Henderson gives us here. Now; thanks to Henderson's well written accounts I have a better understanding of the state of Texas and its participation n the Civil War. Buy this book for your collection
