• An examination of the interactions of the Christian Knights Templar and their Muslim counterparts; the Assassins; and of the profound changes in Western society that resulted. • Restores the reputation of the secret Muslim order of the Assassins; disparaged as the world's first terrorist group. • Dispels many myths about the Knights Templar and provides the most incisive portrait of them to date. A thousand years ago Christian battled Muslim for possession of a strip of land upon which both their religions were founded. These Crusades changed the course of Western history; but less known is the fact that they also were the meeting ground for two legendary secret societies: The Knights Templar and their Muslim counterparts; the Assassins. In The Templars and the Assassins: The Militia of Heaven; occult scholar and secret society member James Wasserman provides compelling evidence that the interaction of the Knights Templar and the Assassins in the Holy Land transformed the Templars from the Pope's private army into a true occult society; from which they would sow the seeds of the Renaissance and the Western Mystery Tradition. Both orders were destroyed as heretical some seven hundred years ago; but Templar survivors are believed to have carried the secret teachings of the East into an occult underground; from which sprang both Rosicrucianism and Masonry. Assassin survivors; known as Nizari Ismailis; flourish to this day under the spiritual leadership of the Aga Khan. Wasserman strips the myths from both groups and penetrates to the heart of their enlightened beliefs and rigorous practices; delivering the most probing picture yet of these holy warriors.

Feminine Strength in a Frontier WorldBy Jamie WalzelTexas Tears and Texas Sunshine: Voices of Frontier Women (The Centennial Series of the Association of Former Students; No. 17)I bought this for research purposes to get a woman's point of view of early Texas life while in the process of writing an epic tale myself of a pioneer family who arrived just prior to The Republic in 1835.The vivid stories are structured in a timeline that spans from Mexican Texas to The Republic well into statehood. The collective works give perspective to the hardness of pioneer life while also establishing the ways frontier women tried to have an influence and voice in a world that otherwise oppressed them.Few first-hand accounts from women of this era exist in print. I feel fortunate to have found this book!5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Why Texans Are DifferentBy Mike ShoemakeThis book should give Non-Texans; as well as those critical of Texas; a better understanding of its unique culture and place in the landscape of American History. I would also recommend it to the revisionist historians and those in the media that enjoy taking potshots at Texas attitudes and preferences. I doubt any of these people could have survived Texas; lacking in anything comparable to the courage and bravery of Texans. We are proud of being a Republic long before we made the wrong decision not to remain so.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Stories of Texas Frontier WomenBy Patti LankfordI have a female ancestor who came to Texas as a Republic and am amazed at the strength exhibited by the women of her time. These women were made of sterner stuff than I am. Books like this; with personal accounts of their lives; help me appreciate the difficulties they faced and the courage they exhibited in the face of monumental challenges. The book is a treasure for me. My thanks to the author for the tribute to their lives by celebrating them in this book.
